According to Livemint, online retailers will also start discounting in earnest this month, as they look to bounce back after two quarters of falling sales—the first such in recent memory for many of them.
Online retail sales dipped to an annualized $12 billion in June, compared with $13 billion in March and $15 billion in December, according to estimates by research and advisory firm RedSeer Management Consulting.
Both offline and online retailers are expecting huge sales this festiveseason. According to an article in Business Standard, Kishore Biyani’sFuture Group is expecting to double its sales from a five - day shopping event called ‘Maha Bachat’. This coincides with a discount bonanza from top online players.
Flipkart and Amazon will go head - to - head in a discounting war starting with the Independence Daysale, that both companies plan to advertise heavily, as per the Livemint article.
Amazon had already announced a “Great Indian Sale” in early August.
The Independence Day sale and other sales that these companies will launch this year willinclude all kinds of products including laptops, furniture, large appliances and most importantly, smartphones, the single largest product category for e - commerce firms.
Amazon has also recently launched its Prime service ahead of the festive season in India. Lastweek, Amazon launched its global Prime membership programme in more than 100 cities in India, offering one - day and two - day delivery on hundreds of thousands of products for a fixed price of Rs. 499 initially.
Most major e - commerce websites are in the middle of their Independence Day sales with huge discounts, some even going up to 80% off, or more on several products.
Take Amazon for example, which has come up a ‘Fashion Freedom Sale’ with with discounts as high as 70%.
