Double negatives occur when there are two forms of negatives in the same sentence or clause. Double negatives usually have a negative verb, a negative pronoun, a negative adverb or a negative conjunction. Double negatives are regarded as non standard usage in formal English. They are very common in informal English. 

When there are two negatives in a sentence or a clause, they work like a mathematic equation. They slash each other and the meaning of the sentence becomes a positive one. Here are a few examples: 

  • I don't know nothing about computers. (This means - I know about computers. )

  • It won't do you no good. (It means - It will do you good. )
