Double negatives occur when there are two forms of negatives in the same sentence or clause. Double negatives usually have negative verb, negative pronoun, negative adverb or negative conjunction. Double negatives are regarded as non standard usage in formal English. They are very common in informal English.

When there are two negatives in sentence or clause, they work like mathematic equation. They slash each other and the meaning of the sentence becomes positive one. Here are few examples:

  • don't know nothing about computers. (This means know about computers.
  •
  • It won't do you no good. (It means It will do you good.
