What are clauses?
A clause is a group of words that includes a subject and a predicate.
A clause can be distinguished from a phrase, which does not contain a subject and a verb (e. g. , in the morning, drinking from the bowl).
Clauses are mainly of two types:
1) Independent clause
2) Dependent clause
Independent clause:
An independent clause, also called a main clause, is like a sentence. It consists of a subject and a predicate and can stand alone like a sentence. It makes a sentence meaningful.
Example:
He likes to play hockey.
They are friends.
Dependent clause:
A dependent clause, also called subordinate clause, unlike an independent clause, it cannot stand alone as a sentence and doesn't make sense.
Example:
because we are friends.
