It is France’s most loved festivals. Fête de la Musique or music day is an annual celebration in France on 21st June. On music day the citizens of the city or country are allowed and urged to play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public spaces and parks.
Free concerts are also organized, where musicians play for fun and not for payment.
The festival promotes music in 2 ways:
- Amateur and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets.
- Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public.
The festival has continued to be popular among French people, and has spread to hundreds of other countries around the world.
Fête de la Musique’ is a homophone of ‘Faites de la musique’ (make some music), which is the slogan used to encourage all musicians, amateur and professional alike, to perform on the streets.
This day of the year is an occasion to enjoy the summer out, with good food, drink and merrymaking. So if you are in France during that period, don’t miss the chance to mingle with the French crowds, and participate in this festive street event.
