We all know that Brazil has a very strong religious culture which dates back to centuries. The churches of Brazil provide a fascinating glimpse into the birth and evolution of Christianity.
The main religion of this South American country is Roman Catholicism and there are more than 300 cathedrals across Brazil.
1. Cathedral of Brasília -
It is located at Brasilia's heart with swooping 16 columns, connected by breathtaking glazed windows, that seem to open into the sky.
2. São Francisco Church and Convent, Salvador -
Franciscan established a convent and church in Salvador, the first capital of colonial Brazil, soon after the Portuguese arrived. Everything from ceiling to vaults is covered in gold and features imported Portuguese tilework depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.
3. The Dom Bosco Sanctuary Brasilia -
It is situated in the heart of the town. Inside, its walls are entirely made from blue and purple stained glass, which gives it an ethereal and mysterious ambience. Also, the exquisite chandelier illuminates this interior spectacularly.
Admission to the Dom Bosco Sanctuary is free, and it is open 24 hours a day.
4. Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro -
The structure of this church is inspired by Mayan Pyramids and has long stretches of stained glass. It can accommodate as many as 20, 000 worshipers at once.
5. Church of São Francisco na Pampulha, Belo Horizonte -
In the 20th Century, churches served as much as government buildings to express the ambitions of modern Brazil. This church by Oscar Niemeyer, is the first modern building in Brazil to receive landmark status. It also became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016.
