Buddha Purnima is celebrated in according to the Buddha’s Birthday. It is a holiday habitually notable in Mahayana Buddhism to commemorate the birth, enlightenment (nirvāna), and death (Parinirvāna) of Prince Siddhartha Gautama or as we commonly know, Gautama Buddha. He was born in Lumbini in Nepal, around the year of 563 BCE and elevated in Kapilavastu and he attained enlightenment underneath a Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya (modern day India).
The accurate date of Buddha’s Birthday is based on the Asian calendars. It is mainly celebrated in Baisakh month of the Buddhist and Hindu calendar. Therefore, it is also called Vesak.
Buddha Purnima is eminent on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month of the Buddhist calendar In Nepal. It falls on a full moon Uposatha day, normally in the 5th or 6th astral month. The date differs from year to year. But usually it falls in April or May. This year it is on 22nd May 2018.
On the day of the Purnima, Buddhist monks and priests decorate temple in colorful decorations and candles. The event is celebrated by gentle and serene fervor, keeping in mind the very nature of Buddhism.
