What is Halloween?
Halloween is celebrated on the eve of 31st October every year. It is that time of the year which is dedicated to remembering the dead including saints, martyrs and all departed souls. Some of the activities include visiting Halloween parties, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, watching horror films, trick or treat (where children go from house to house collecting treats, and trick stands for some kind of mischief), etc.
Should you Dress up your Dog for Halloween?
Halloween has become a big business over the past few decades. So whether it's buying a costume for your pooch or yourself, people spend a lot of money to celebrate this day in a different way. It is estimated that in the US, dog owners spend $350m each year dressing them up.
The Tompkins Square Halloween dog parade in New York which is about to mark its 28th year features hundreds of dogs in elaborate costumes and props. You will find nearly 200, 000 posts on Instagram with the hashtag #dogcostume.
But the question arises if it's alright to put your furry friend through a fancy dress or get his hair dyed and styled into unusual designs. Certainly, this may not be right as there is a risk that animals may have allergic reactions to such products. Hence, it is advisable that owners adhere to certain rules around Halloween costumes and grooming.
The point is that the costumes and hairstyles may look very attractive but then underneath that costume, there is a dog who might not be comfortable. Another thing to be kept in mind while buying a costume for your dog is its material. Avoid nylon and polyester. Don't forcibly make them wear a costume if you feel that they are getting stressed or uncomfortable or their body language has changed.
After all, a dog should be allowed to be a dog.
