Bengali New Year 2019 will be celebrated on 14th April this year. Bengali New Year or Poila Boishak is a special day that also marks the start of the Bengal year. It is celebrated with full enthusiasm and joy. Bengalis wish “Shubho Naba Barsho!” to their friends and family which means “Happy New Year” in English.
On this day, people go to the temple in the morning and seek blessing from God for good fortune. Some people even conduct special puja at their shops for success and welfare.
People meet and greet their family and friends. They wear new clothes and give sweets to each other. They even wash down their homes and decorate with rangoli and mango leaves garlands at the main entrance. Few people consider boiling milk and letting it spill as it indicates the overflowing of wealth and good luck.
People cook special sweet dishes like Sandesh, Ras Malai, Payesh, and rosogollas. Bengali festival is incomplete without fish. Hench various fish dishes are also cooked and served.
Bengali New Year is an auspicious day for the owners of shops to open their financial books. They perform Lakshmi Pooja and Ganesh Pooja. Various competitions are held at schools and colleges. Bengali new year fair is also organized with different food and games stalls.
