The festival occurs during the harvesting of winter crops. This day is celebrated as a thanksgiving day by Sikh farmers and they also pay their tribute to God for the plentiful harvest.
The community also seeks blessings for future prosperity and growth. It is a spring harvest festival for Sikhs and Hindus.
Another reason for celebrating this festival is that in 1699 the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, chose Vaisakhi as the occasion to transform the Sikhs into a family of soldier saints, known as the Khalsa Panth.
It marks the Sikh new year and commemorates the formation of Khalsa Panth. Vaisakhi is also an ancient festival of Hindus, marking the Solar New Year and also celebrating the spring harvest.
It is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. Even Baisakhi fairs are organized with various activities. Farmers dress up traditionally and exchange sweets and delicious dishes prepared by them.
