Since ours is democratic country, Elections form the backbone of the country since people have the right to elect their political representative. Therefore, holding fair elections on state and national level becomes imperative.

Here are the steps involved in Election Process:

1. Announcement of Elections: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the dates for Lok Sabha and some state Assembly elections. After the announcement of dates the moral code of conduct comes into force immediately.

2. Filling of Nominations: It is one of the important parts of the election process. In order to be chosen member of the Rajya Sabha or the State Legislative Council, person must be 30 years of age or above. And for election to the Lok sabha or the State Legislative Assembly, person should have attained age of 25 years.

3. Scrutiny of Nominations: After the nominations have been filed, the Returning Officer scrutinizes the nomination papers very carefully. If someone is not found eligible, he is officially stopped from contesting election for six years.

4. Election Campaign: These days electronic media plays an effective role in creating people’s awareness about programmes of the political parties. The party leaders give series of interviews to newspapers and television agencies.

5. Polling Process: The election campaign should stop 48 hours before the time when poll concludes on the polling day. The voter records his vote by pressing the button against the name of the desired candidate on the voting machine.

6. Counting of Votes and Declaration of Results:
After the polling ends the ballot boxes or the voting machines are sealed and carried under custody to the respective counting stations. Then the process of counting the votes begins. The candidate who gets the highest number of votes is declared elected.
