ಸೂಚನೆ
She said, \'I like ice-cream\'.

ಅವಳು ಹೇಳಿದಳು \'ನನಗೆ ಐಸ್ ಕ್ರೀಂ ಇಷ್ಟ\'.
ಇದು 'Direct speech' ಆಗಿರುವುದು - ನಾವು ಯಾರಾದರು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತನ್ನು, ಅವರ (ಹೇಳುವವರ) ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವೆವು.
ಏಕೆಂದರೆ
ಹೇಳುವವ ತನ್ನನ್ನು 'I' ಇಂದ ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಅವರ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಹೇಳಿರುವ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ 'I'
ಬರುವುದು.
ಹೇಳುವವರ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ನಾವು ಆ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು \'Inverted commas\' ನ ಒಳಗೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಏಕೆಂದರೆ
ಹೇಳುವವ ತನ್ನನ್ನು 'I' ಇಂದ ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಅವರ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಹೇಳಿರುವ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ 'I'
ಬರುವುದು.
ಹೇಳುವವರ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ನಾವು ಆ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು \'Inverted commas\' ನ ಒಳಗೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.
She said (that) she liked ice-cream.

ಅವಳು ಹೇಳಿದಳು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಐಸ್ ಕ್ರೀಂ ಇಷ್ಟ ಎಂದು.
ಇದು 'Reported speech' ಆಗಿರುವುದು - ನಾವು ಯಾರೋ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತನ್ನು, ನಮ್ಮ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವೆವು.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವವ 'she' (3rd person) ಆಗಿರುವುದು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಅವಳು ಹೇಳಿರುವ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳುವಾಗ, ಅವಳನ್ನು 'she' ಎಂದು ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವವ 'she' (3rd person) ಆಗಿರುವುದು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಅವಳು ಹೇಳಿರುವ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳುವಾಗ, ಅವಳನ್ನು 'she' ಎಂದು ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
ಸೂಚನೆ
I said, 'I am the best student of the class'.

ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದೆ, \'ನಾನು ಕಕ್ಷೆಯ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ವಿಧ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ\'.
I said (that) I was the best student of the class. = ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದೆ, ನಾನು ಕಕ್ಷೆಯ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ವಿಧ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಎಂದು.
ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವೇ ಹೇಳಿರುವ ಮಾತನ್ನು ರಿಪೋರ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವಿರಿ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವವರು ಸ್ವಯಂ ನೀವೇ (I).
ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ personal pronoun - 'I', ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುವಾಗ, ನಿಮನ್ನು ನೀವೇ 'I' ಇಂದ ಸಂಬೋಧಿಸಿಸುವಿರಿ.
ಸೂಚನೆ

ಅವಳು ನೇಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದಳು \'ನೀನು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದ್ದೀಯಾ\'.
ಮೊದಲ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ Direct speech ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ, ನಾವು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವವರ ಶಬ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವೆವು.

Reported speech ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೇಹಾ 2nd person ಅಲ್ಲ, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ನೀವು ಸೀದಾ ಅವಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ .

Reported speech: ಇಲ್ಲಿ work-> worked ಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದು ಏಕೆಂದರೆ verb (said) ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ನಾವು direct speech ಅನ್ನು reported speech ಆಗಿ ಬದಲಿಸುವಾಗ, reported verb (eg: said) ಭೂತಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೆ, reported speech ನ tense, direct speech ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ tense ನ ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ರೂಪ ಆಗುವುದು
ಒಮೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ತರಹದ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ tense ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ - ಇದು ಯಾವಾಗ ಆಗುವುದೆಂದರೆ, ನಾವು ಹೇಳುವುದು ಈಗಲೂ ನಿಜವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅಥವಾ ಒಂದು 'universal truth' ಆಗಿದ್ದರೆ (Eg: The Sun is a star).
