Types of Nouns

Nouns are a part of speech that indicate people, things, objects, concepts, etc.
E.g. Peter, pen, glass, success, station, etc.

Identifying a Noun:
A noun is a part of speech that denotes a person, animal, place, thing, or idea.

1)Person – A term for a person, whether proper name, gender, title, or class, is a noun.
2)Animal – A term for an animal, whether proper name, species, gender, or class is a noun.
3)Place – A term for a place, whether proper name, physical location is a noun.
4)Thing – A term for a thing, whether it exists now, will exist, or existed in the past is a noun.
5)Idea – A term for an idea, be it a real, workable idea or a fantasy that might never come to fruition is a noun.

There are various types of nouns:

1) Proper nouns and Common nouns.

1. Proper nouns or common nouns

Proper nouns:
i)They name specific one–of–a–kind items.
ii)They begin with capital letters, no matter where they occur in a sentence.
E.g. India, London, Peter, Lisa, Yamuna, Indian Ocean, Coca–Cola.

Common nouns:
These are words used to name general items rather than specific ones.
E.g. lamp, chair, couch, TV, window, painting, pillow, candle.

2. Abstract nouns and concrete nouns–

Abstract nouns
• These are the nouns that refer to concepts, ideas, emotions, etc.
• Abstract nouns are nouns that you cannot touch, are not made of materials, but play an important role in life.
• Abstract nouns are words that name things that are not concrete.
• Your five physical senses cannot detect an abstract noun – you can't see it, smell it, taste it, hear it, or touch it.

Here are common abstract nouns: success, depression, love, hate, anger.

Concrete Nouns
• Concrete nouns refer to things that you can touch, taste, see, etc.
• There are actual things that we interact with on a daily basis.
• Concrete nouns can be both countable and uncountable.

Here are some typical concrete nouns:
i) Countable Concrete Nouns: orange, desk, book, car, house, etc.
ii) Uncountable Concrete Nouns: rice, water, pasta, etc.

3. Collective Nouns
• Collective nouns refer to groups of various types.
• Collective nouns are most commonly used with groups of animals.
• Collective nouns can be used in both the singular and plural, although collective nouns tend to be used in the singular.
Here are some common collective nouns referring to groups of animals: herd, litter, pack, swarm, hive.

Collective nouns are also commonly used for names of institutions and groups within institutions such as academic, business and governmental organizations.
