Articles

The words 'a', 'an' and 'the' are called 'Articles'. There are 2 articles – 'a (an)' and 'the'.

'A' and 'an' are called indefinite articles because they introduce a noun phrase and imply that the thing being referred to, is non-specific.
E.g. A doctor (any doctor).

• Indefinite articles are used before singular, countable nouns.
E.g. A book, an orange, a girl.

The choice between a and an is determined by the sound with which the word begins: consonant sound or vowel sound.
i) Before a word beginning with a vowel sound, the article 'an' is used.
E.g. An enemy, an umbrella, an hour (In the word 'hour', 'h' is silent and the word begins with a vowel sound 'ah' therefore 'an' is used with the word.).
ii) Before a word beginning with a consonant sound 'a' is used.
E.g. A boy, a yard, a hole.
Also: A university, a union (because these words begin with the consonant sound of 'yu'); a one–rupee note (as this words begins with a consonant sound of 'w').
