Read the following sentences:
i) I write letters to please her.
ii) I wrote the letter in his very presence.
iii) I shall write another letter tomorrow.
In sentence 1, the verb 'write' refers to 'present' time.
In sentence 2, the verb wrote refers to 'past' time.
In sentence 3, the verb shall write refers to 'future' time.

A verb that refers to the 'present' is said to be in the Present Tense.
E.g. I write, I love

The Simple Present is used:
i) To express a habitual action. E.g. He has a sumptuous breakfast every morning.

ii) To express general truths. E.g. The sun rises in the east.

iii) In exclamatory sentences beginning with 'here' and 'there' to express what is actually taking place in the present.
E.g. Here comes the bus!
There she goes! (Not: There goes she!)

iv) To express a future event that is part of a fixed timetable or fixed programme.
E.g. The match starts at 9 o'clock.
The train leaves at 5.20.

Other uses of the Simple Present Tense:
i) It is used to introduce quotations.
E.g. Keats says, ‘A thing of beauty is a joy for ever’.

ii) It is used, instead of the Simple Future Tense, in clauses of time and of condition.
E.g. I shall wait till you finish your lunch.

Use these words and the correct form of the verb to make a sentence in the simple present tense. 'always / Mark / his children / kiss / goodnight'

The Present Continuous tense is used:
i) For an action going on at the time of speaking.
E.g. The boys are playing hockey.

ii) For a temporary action which may not be actually happening at the time of speaking.
E.g. I am reading ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ (but I am not reading at this moment).

iii) For an action that has already been arranged to take place in the near future.
E.g. I am going to the mall tonight.

Note: When the reference is made to a particularly obstinate (stubborn) habit - something which persists, we use the Present Continuous tense with an adverb like always, continually, constantly.
E.g. My dog is very silly - he is always running out into the road.

Verbs of appearing appear, look, seem
Verbs of emotion want, wish, desire, feel, like, love, hate, hope, refuse, prefer
Verbs of thinking think, suppose, believe, agree, consider, trust, remember, forget, know, understand, imagine, mean, mind
Have own, possess, belong to, contain, consist of, be (except when used in the passive)

The Present Perfect is used:
i) To indicate completed activities in the immediate past (with just).
E.g. He has just gone out.

ii) To express past actions whose time is not given and not definite.
E.g. a) I have never known him to be angry.
b) Mr. Yadav has been to Japan.

iii) To describe past events when we think more of their effect in the present than of the action itself.
E.g. I have finished my work (means now I am free).

iv) To denote an action beginning at some time in the continuing up to the present moment (often with since- and/or-phrases).
E.g. a) I Have known him for a long time.
b) We haven't seen Padmini for several months.

Note: The Present Perfect is never used with adverbs of past time. We should not say, e.g., 'He has gone to Kolkata yesterday'. In such cases the Simple Past should be used ('He went to Kolkata yesterday').

Present Perfect Continuous Tense:
The Present Perfect Continuous is used for an action which began at some time in the past and is still continuing.
E.g. He has been sleeping for five hours (and is still sleeping).

This tense is also sometimes used for an action already finished. In such cases, the continuity of the activity is emphasized as an explanation of something.
E.g. 'Why are your clothes so wet?' - 'I have been watering the garden'.
