When we make a sentence,
(1) we name a person or thing; and
(2) say something about that person or thing.
Hence, every sentence has two parts:
(1) The part which names the person or thing that we are speaking about. This is called the 'Subject' of the sentence.
(2) The part which tells something about the 'Subject'. This is called the 'Predicate' of the sentence.
The Subject of a sentence usually comes first, but occasionally it is put after the Predicate.
E.g.
i) Here comes the bus. (Subject is the bus)
ii) Sweet are the uses of adversity. (Subject is the adversity)
In imperative sentences, the 'Subject' is often left out;
E.g. Sit down. [Here the Subject, 'You', is understood].
Thank him. [Here the Subject, 'You', is understood.]

A predicate is the completer of a sentence. The subject names the \'do-er\' or \'be-er\' of the sentence; the predicate does the rest of the work. A simple predicate consists of only a verb, verb string, or compound verb.
E.g. The glacier melted.

Compound Subjects and Predicates
A compound subject is when two or more separate subjects take the same predicate or group of predicates. A compound predicate is a when a subject or group of subjects take two or more predicates.
E.g. (i) Mira and I played a game.
In this sentence, the predicate is played. So we ask ourselves, \'Who played?\'. Of course, both Mira and I played, so the clause has two subjects or a compound subject.
(ii)I went home and studied.
What is the verb in the above sentence? You might notice that there are two: went and studied. Since the subject, 'I', takes both of these predicates, the clause has a compound predicate.
