Rule 6: Sometimes the subject is separated from the verb by words such as: along with, as well as, besides, not, etc. These words and phrases are not part of the subject. Ignore them and use a singular verb when the subject is singular.

E.g.
1) The politician, along with the newsmen, is expected shortly. ('Politician' is a singular noun)
2) Excitement, as well as nervousness, is the cause of her shaking. ('Excitement' is a singular noun)
3) The politicians, along with the First lady, are expected shortly. ('Politicians' is a plural noun)

Rule 7: In sentences beginning with here or there, the true subject follows the verb.
