Simple Past -一般过去式

I am tired now = 我现在累了。
Now = 现在（现在式）
这里说的是现在的事，所以要用'am'。我现在累了
Am是现在式的动词 (Present Tense)。
I was tired last night = 我昨晚累了
Last night = 昨晚，表示这是过去的事了，因此我们要用 'was' 代表过去式。
Was - 过去式(Past Tense)。

现在式中要用Are
你现在迟到了，这说的是现在的事情，因此要用are。
You were late yesterday = 你昨天迟到了。
Yesterday = 昨天，这段时间已经过去了，因此这里要用 'were'.

在英文，Simple past tense (简单过去式) 可用于表示过去，即便没有说到什么时候发生的事 (没有'yesterday'(昨天), 'last month(上个月)'等等)。
