Modi, BJP continue to get high favourable ratings: Survey

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP continue to enjoy high favourable ratings while Congress President Sonia Gandhi also gained slightly in popularity, according to new survey, findings of which were released on Tuesday. 
The Spring 2016 Global Attitudes Survey conducted by the US based Pew Research Center (PRC) found that 81 percent of the respondents had favourable view of Modi and 80 percent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 
The survey was conducted among 2, 464 respondents in India between April and May 24 this year. 
"Our aim is to provide snapshot of public opinion, Bruce Stokes, Director of Global Economic Attitudes at PRC, said while releasing the survey findings here. 
PRC is non profit, non partisan, non advocacy fact tank based in Washington. 
Sonia Gandhi's favourable ratings rose to 65 percent from 58 percent last year while that of Rahul Gandhi remained unmoved at 63 percent 
Around 65 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the economy in the country and 35 percent find the economy "very good". 
"Around 72 percent feel that children in India today will be financially better off when they grow up than their parents, Stokes said. 
"That is not the case in the US and Europe, he stated. 
Around 68 percent feel that India is playing more important role in the world than 10 years ago. 
India's involvement in the global economy is seen as good by 52 percent of those surveyed. 
"Modi's leadership style is also largely seen in positive light, Stokes said. 
While 62 percent approve Modi's helping of the poor, 59 percent approve his handling of corruption and 61 percent his handling of terrorism. 
Interestingly, 62 percent of the respondents felt that overwhelming use of military force was the best way to deal with terrorism and 63 percent were in favour of increase in defence spending. 
As for other countries, 56 percent hold favourable view of the US while the number is only 14 percent in the case of Pakistan. 
China also formed an important factor in the survey. 
Around 45 percent of those surveyed were very seriously concerned about China's economic impact on India. 
While 48 percent were concerned about China's relationship with Pakistan, 45 percent were worried about China's territorial disputes with India. 
Interestingly, crime (82 percent) topped the list of problems that concern Indians. 
This was followed by corrupt officials (80 percent), terrorism (78 percent) and communal relations (54 percent). 
Around 52 percent feel that the quasi state terror outfit is major threat to India while 53 percent see global climate change as major threat to the country.
