In a pot shot at the Mamata Banerjee - led Trinamool Congress, the CPI - M on Tuesday said there was asomething fishy' about those seeking a "complete rollback" of the demonetisation exercise.
Asserting that the Communist Party of India - Marxist never demanded a reversal of the demonetisation exercise, its General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said: "We have urged the central government to allow circulation of the demonetised currency notes till there was adequate supply of new notes. "
Banerjee has been the most belligerent opponent of the demonetisation move operationalised by the Narendra Modi government.
She has time and again demanded a complete rollback of the exercise, arguing that it has landed the country in a financial emergency like situation causing untold hardship to the poorer sections of the society, particularly the rural population.
"We have never demanded a complete rollback of demonetisationa There is something fishy about those who are demanding a total rollback of demonetisation, " Yechury said addressing a party rally at the Shahid Minar Maidan.
Ridiculing Modi's demonetisation move, he said: "All the three aims that the prime minister had highlighed - stopping circulation of black money, ending corruption and profusion of fake currrency - have failed. "
