The Nepal Government on Wednesday made a shocking revelation that 17 Nepalis migrant workers are facing capital punishment in foreign countries.
At least 43 Nepalis have been handed life imprisonment and more than 239 Nepalis have been serving the term from a month to 50 years in prison.
As many as 318 Nepalis have been languishing in foreign prisons excluding India, according to a report prepared by the section of the foreign affairs adviser under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
Similarly, legal cases have been filed seeking capital punishment to 14 Nepalis and life imprisonment to three Nepali Nationals.
Those serving jails were accused of various crimes including murder, drug trafficking, trafficking in human, dacoit, rape, production of illegal liquor, and fraud cases, according to the report.
Sushil Dhungana at the foreign affairs advisors' section at OPMCM informed that Nepalis were found to be languishing in at least 32 countries.
The country having highest numbers of Nepali prisoners are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, South Korea, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Singapore.
In Malaysia alone, at least 500 Nepali citizens have been detained at Returnee Centre.
