The Supreme Court on Monday said a five - judge Constitution Bench will hear a batch of petitions which challenged the validity of the Aadhaar law on the grounds of being intrusive and violating the right to privacy.
An apex court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A. M. Khanwilkar, and Justice D. Y. Chandrachud ordered the next hearing in the last week of November, after Attorney General K. K. Venugopal informed the court that the Centre had filed a detailed affidavit to deny all allegations on expansion of Aadhaar linkages.
Urging the court for status quo and to not issue further interim orders, Venugopal said the Centre had issued more than 100 orders and notifications to address the glitches in the implementation of Aadhaar.
He said misinformation was being spread about the linking of Aadhaar with various schemes.
After the court order on hearing of the matter by the Constitution Bench, the issue of extending the December 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar Cards with bank accounts, Permanent Account Numbers, mobile phone numbers, and other schemes for those who don't have the unique identification number has been put on the back burner.
On October 25, the Centre had indicated to the apex court that it was open to extension in the deadline to March 31 for those without the unique identification number but willing to go for it.
The validity of Aadhaar law has been challenged by a batch of petitioners, including former Karnataka High Court Judge K. S. Puttaswamy, Magsaysay awardee Shanta Sinha, and feminist researcher Kalyani Sen Menon.
