Specially - minted commemorative gold and silver coins bearing the image of Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah were launched.
The half ounce and one ounce pure gold and silver coins, bearing the image of Sultan Sharafuddin and his personal royal crest, were unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a ceremony in conjunction with the launch of gold bars refined by Demi Idaman Sdn Bhd.
In his speech, Najib lauded the company for operating the nation's first accredited gold refinery.
"Now, with the development of our first commercial gold refinery, we have the ability to process gold, from the smelting phase through refinement, within Malaysia, " he said.
Najib said this initiative stemmed from the KL Gold Programme which he launched in 2014 to drive Muslim participation in the gold industry.
He said gold has always played an important role for the nation with the precious metal used not merely as jewellery and trade, but also in producing critical high technology components.
