In the sentence 'I wish I were rich', why do we use 'were' after 'I', because 'were' is used for plural and 'I' is used for singular

Because this is a conditional sentence and the type of this sentence, we use the second form of verb in second part of sentence. Here were is the second form of verb 'be'.So, it's a right sentence.
