Please explain had and was

Had is used in past perfect tense and also to show past possession. Ex:- He had gone there. We had an old watch. Was is used in simple past tense when there is no verb in given sentence and also in past continuous tense with I,he,she,it,singular subject. Ex:- She was a beautiful girl. I was going to market.
