When is "group" singular and when is it plural?

When the group is being considered as a whole, it can be treated as a single entity: "the group was ready to go on stage." But when the individuality of its members is being emphasized, "group" is plural: "the group were in disagreement about where to go for dinner."

The whole group (means the total members / things ) works together/same purpose will treated as singular..... If the whole group is divided to work on various purpose or not working together will treated as plural.

it depends on using actually. when a group is represented as a whole and individually then it is singular but when its shows variety and divisions it will be plural. as an example * The cricket team has made us proud. * The players of the cricket team are really praiseworthy....

group is cosideried as singular in grammar like team. a bunch of people or animal or things comes together it become a group. But exception is always there it could be plural if speakers want to mention more than a group all things depend on speakers

It depends on conditions. For instance, if group is working on something then it is singular, but when group is emphasised, it is plural.
