![]() Both "a"and "an" are indefinite articles. we use "a"before a singular noun that begins with a consonant.Similarly, "an" is used before a singular noun, but before a noun that begins with a vowel, exception to some nouns that start with "u"=> -if the letter "u" is pronounced/ju/, put "a" before the noun.eg: a uniform/ a university... - if the letter "u" is pronounced differently then put "an", eg: an umbrella/ an underground... N.B: how about acronyms (abbreviated letters , like SMS/BBC...) do we use a/ an before them? - When the first letter of the acronym starts with a consonant sound then use "a" before the acronym.Eg: a BBC(B=/bi/->b is a consonant sound). - When the first letter of the acronym starts with a vowel sound in this case use "an" before the acronym.Eg: an SMS (S=es ->starts with a vowel sound).
