In simple past tense, when there is a main verb in the given sentence then we use "did" as a helping verb, not was/ were. For ex:- Did she go there yesterday? If you don't understand what the main verb in the given sentence then you can ask a question to the given subject. After asking question, which you'll get as the answer. It will be the main verb of that sentence because verbs are action words that generally show some action. In example, if we ask:- What did she do yesterday? Then answer is "go". So it's the main verb of this sentence. * Was he upset? How was he? Ans:- upset What did he do? Ans:- no answer
