Don't confuse.Understand all functions related to it carefully. Both did not and were not are used in simple past tense as a helping verb. Did not - is used to frame a negative sentence when there is a main verb (like, speak, walk, etc.) in the given sentence. For ex:- He did not like her. She did not speak english. Were not - is used to frame a negative sentence when there is no main verb in the given sentence. For ex:- You were not good. They were not poor before.
