Yes! In simple past tense we use "did/was/were" as helping verbs. When there is no main verb in the given sentence then we use "was/were" as a helping verb in simple past tense. For ex:- He was a teacher. She was not a good mother. Were they really happy? But it didn't seem to see them. Whereas when there is a main verb in the given sentence then we use "did" as a helping verb. For ex:- We did not make a noise in the class. Why did you do so?
