It's depends on the sub. If the sub. is 3rd person singular no. (he,she,it etc.) then it'll be "was". If the sub is 1st person singular/plural no then it'll be " were"

did is used for simple past when the sentence have verb was/were is also used for simple past when the sentence don't have verb ex.She was not at home in this ex.verb is not here was / were is also used for past continuous
