Famous – Famous people are well known by others but not much loved by others. For example, Osama Bin Laden. He was famous, but not everybody used to like him. Notorious people can be Famous but not Popular. Popular – Popular people are Famous and loved by others too. For example :- Salman Khan. He is so Famous & Popular. As everyone knows him and luv him . Good people can be Famous as well as Popular.

Famous means known by many people because of their achievements or works while, popular means liked by many people. A famous person is a someone a lot of people know about. We can't use these two words interchangeably.
