"Haan" ("yes") "And that is why the strength of the class was so poor last Saturday, that more than half of the children had gone for begging?" "Yeh jo pass me lal batti hai na? Wahan jate hain. Unhe kabhi Kabar 500-600 Rs mil jate hain." ("You know, the Red Light nearby? They go there. They get Rs500-600 sometimes") "500-600! What! You are lying." "Haan 500-600. Uska nasha ke liye le lete hain. School me bhi padhte huye nashe me rehte hain." ("Yes 500-600. They use the money to buy drugs. Even while they are studying in school, they remain drugged.") "Their parents know about it?" "Haan, woh khud bhi Nashe me rehte hain." ("Yes their parents themselves remain drugged") "Don't the teachers at school try to stop these children?" "They do,but the children don't listen." "Tum toh nahi karte na?" (I asked him if he takes drugs too) "Nahi didi Bilkul nahi!" ("No sister,Not at all!") "Karna bhi mat. Agar woh bole, tab bhi mat karna." ("Dont do it. Even if they tell you to,DON'T") "A teacher Didi comes to teach us on some days. She knows about this too. She teaches only those children who aren't intoxicated." Before taking these volunteering sessions which comprised of kids who were only 7-12 years of age,we were duly informed by our respective organizations that we might have to go to shelters where people give drugs to their children so that they don't pester them for food or other amenities. We were told to ignore such a scene and continue teaching them what we had to. Since we can't negotiate with their parents about the same,we can CHOOSE NOT TO PARTICIPATE in this facade. People,PLEASE REFRAIN from giving such a large amount of money to children at street lights;instead of fighting poverty indirectly, you're propagating a horrendous trend. NEVER GIVE SUCH CHILDREN MONEY DIRECTLY! If you feel like helping someone, buy food, like bread, and then give it to them. Not all children begging at Lal battis are illiterate, many of them attend school,or get tuitions. Buy them stationary, like pencils, papers, rubbers, scale, colours, etc which might end up helping them in their studies. Also, such children are in a dire need for clothes. If you can't give then new clothes, old ones(but preferably not torn) can also prove to be handy(though new ones would be great). Share this message in any way you can. SPREAD THE WORD.If you want to donate anything, please docin the shelters within the proximity of your neighbourhood. EVERY LITTLE STEP HELPS! ((By paying, you never help a beggar. In such situations, you do make them even more poor. Buy them food;clothing, take them to a shelter;care. By choosing to giving them money straight away;you are being lazy. This situation needs to be shared to all Indians ASAP. Again, please share it. You don't know how much you would be helping if you could just copy paste it and send it to everyone. Thankyou. )
