![]() The past continuous tense is used to describe an action that was in progress at a specific point in the past or was ongoing for a period of time in the past. It is also called the past progressive tense. The past continuous tense is formed by using the past tense of "to be" (was/were) followed by the present participle form of the verb (-ing form). Here are some examples of how to use the past continuous tense: To describe an action that was in progress at a specific point in the past: I was watching TV when she called me. They were studying when the power went out. To describe two actions that were happening simultaneously in the past: He was playing guitar while she was singing. They were walking and talking at the same time. To describe an action that was ongoing for a period of time in the past: We were living in Paris for five years. She was working at the company for six months. To describe a temporary situation in the past: He was staying with his sister until he found a place of his own. They were using a rented car until their car was repaired. Remember to use the past continuous tense to describe actions that were ongoing or in progress in the past.
