1857 – The first ever uprising (विद्रोह) was against the Rule of British East India Company. It was called ‘The revolt of 1857’.
1885 - Indian National Congress was founded.
1905 - Swadeshi Movement: Indian National Congress urged (दबाव डालना) people to boycott (बहिष्कार करना) British made goods in order to revive (पुनर्जीवित करना) the dormant (प्रसुप्त) local industry and boost (बढ़ाना) the economic condition.
Jan, 1915 - Mahatma Gandhi returned (वापस लौटाना) to India from South Africa to finally live here.
April 13, 1919 - Colonel Dyer ordered the troops (सैन्य - दल) to open fire at the crowd who had gathered (इकटठा होना ) to celebrate Baisakhi. Over a 1000 people died and many more were injured in the The Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
1930 - Gandhiji with 78 other supporters led a march to extract salt from the Arabian Sea at the coastal town of Dandi to defy (विरोध करना) British’s monopoly (एकाधिकार) over salt manufacturing (उत्पादन). It was called Dandi March.
1940 - Muslim League passed the resolution (प्रस्ताव) for Pakistan in the Lahore session.
1942 - Quit India Movement was launched. Indians wanted the British to leave India. Meanwhile (इसी दौरान), Subhash Chandra Bose established (स्थापित) the Indian National Army.
1946 - Nehru took over (हाथ में ले लेना) as the Congress president and tried to form a Government. Muslim League boycotted it in the first session of the constituent assembly (संविधानकारी सभा).
1947 - Lord Mountbatten was elected (चुना जाना) as India’s last viceroy and Mountbatten plan was made for the partition of India. It was declared (घोषणा करना) that the transfer of Powers would take place on the 15 August.
The constituent Assembly met at 11p. m on August 14 to celebrate India’s Independence and Jawaharlal Nehru gave a speech at midnight that is called, “Tryst with Destiny”.
People of India woke up free on the morning of August 15, 1947.
