Usually, the committee holds their meeting on the 29th day of Ramadan.
If the moon is seen anywhere in the country on that day, then the foundation declares that Eid will be celebrated the next day, reports BBC Bangla.
If the moon is not sighted on that day, then Eid is celebrated after the end of the 30th day of Ramadan.
Often, the local committees have to collect and submit photos or videos of the moon as verification of the sighting.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department has 78 stations across the nation; the National Moon - Sighting Committee also maintains close contact with them in case of adverse weather. If the moon cannot be seen with the naked eye, the powerful telescopes at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s disposal assist in confirming the sighting of the moon.
Islamic Foundation Deputy Director Md Harunur Rashid told BBC Bangla: “According to the Islamic laws, if and only if, we see the moon in our country, then we can celebrate Eid. We don’t celebrate Eid - ul - Fitr when the moon is sighted in Saudi Arabia, since there is a time difference between the two countries. ”
