The Rajya Sabha suffered repeated adjournments and disruption in proceedings on Monday with a vociferous opposition continuing its anti - demonetisation protests for the third successive day - - finally the House had to be adjourned to meet on the morrow.
The opposition raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government all through the day.
"Gali gali me shor hai, Narendra Modi chor hai (It is a public outcry, Narendra Modi is a thief)" and "Jan virodhi Narendra Modi hosh mein aao, hosh mein aao (Anti - people Narendra Modi, come to your senses)", shouted the opposition members as they gathered near the Chairman's podium.
The House witnessed five adjournments before being adjourned for the day at 3 p. m.
The agitated members did not even allow Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain to make a statement on Sunday's train derailment near Kanpur in which over 140 people have died.
Opposition members, including from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, the Communist Party of India - Marxist and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), were on their feet raising slogans against the government as the House reassembled after lunch at 2 p. m.
Deputy Chairman P. J. Kurien pleaded with the opposition members to settle down and let Gohain make a statement on the accident.
The protesting members said the train accident was a "serious matter" but the government was not serious about it as it had sent the minister of state to make a statement on it.
"This House is not being given due importance.
He (Gohain) is not a Cabinet minister.
The (Railway) Minister is not busy, " Congress leader Anand Sharma said, adding that Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu should have come to the House to make the statement.
Earlier, when the house reassembled at 12. 30 p. m. after three adjournments, the opposition again started creating ruckus.
To this, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the opposition was not able to gauge the mood of the nation which was in favour of the demonetisation move.
The opposition MPs, who were on their feet, protested loudly the Minister's observation.
They kept demanding obituary reference for the death of people due to standing in queues outside ATMs or banks since the government's November 8 demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1, 000 currency notes.
The House failed to conduct any business for the third consecutive day since the winter session of parliament commenced on November 16.
