Two men were arrested on Thursday on charge of depositing Rs 28 lakh in the bank accounts of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) terror outfit, Meghalaya Police said.
"We have arrested two civilians - - Sengchang Momin and Solly Sangma - - for depositing Rs 28, 00, 000 in bank accounts in Tura (West Garo Hills district) after demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1, 000 notes, " Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) G. H. P. Raju told IANS.
The GNLA, which claims to be fighting for a separate 'Garoland' in western Meghalaya, is headed by Champion R. Sangma, lodged in the Shillong jail after his arrest from near the India - Bangladesh border in 2012.
The Centre has declared GNLA a terrorist group.
The police officer said the arrested persons have confessed that the cash belonged to Baichung Ch Momin, an area commander of GNLA.
Raju said police have asked bank authorities to freeze these bank accounts.
Last month, police seized Rs 35 lakh in Williamnagar from Batsrang and Saljepa, alleged to be hard - core GNLA cadres, while attempting to deposit terror funds in banks.
Raju said the Centre had issued a general alert that outlawed militant groups might park their illgotten money in bank accounts of civilians.
"We have requested all banks in the state to be watchful of any suspicious deposits and to inform police in such cases.
We have also alerted public not to allow their bank accounts to be misused for parking terror funds of militant groups and to pass on the information to police in case they are forced by any militant group or anti - social elements, " police said.
