Around 28 Indian companies are participating in the Cairo International Fair after a gap of five years.
"The Egyptian Expo and Convention Authority (EECA) conferred on India the Guest of Honour status, in recognition of India's large, diverse and significant presence. Indian exhibitors brought beautiful handicrafts for display and sale, items which are highly valued in Egypt, " a statement said.
The Indian participation at the fair - - that began on March 16 and will end on March 25 - - was organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation.
A special feature of the Indian pavilion is a team of small and medium enterprises (SME) manufacturers from Karnataka. There are also members from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, and ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises.
Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail visited the Indian pavilion after the inauguration. He was accompanied by Sanjay Bhattacharyya, ambassador of India to Egypt.
Tarek Kabil, minister of trade and industry, Ashraf Salman, minister of investments, and Khaled Hanafy, minister of supplies, were present at the event.
Handicraft items from Indian exhibitors showcased at the event include zardozi (handmade embroidery) from Bareilly, contemporary ladies wear from New Delhi (supplier to European chains like Zara), handcrafted leather goods from Udaipur, exquisite Kundan jewellery from Jaipur, Islamic silverware from Delhi, intricate jewellery made of paddy and Katha embroidery from Kolkata.
