Rich tributes were paid to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary on Thursday, with Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led the state in lauding his contribution to the country.
Naik and Adityanath paid floral tributes at his statue at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Bhawan, which is also the seat of power of the government and houses the office of the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and senior officials.
Adityanath remembered Shastri as a leader who played an important role in the development of India and added how till now, the works, initiatives and works done for self - reliance and security of the country were fresh in the minds of the common people.
"Shastri ji's simplicity and honesty are worth emulating for all, " he said.
Many other functions and programmes were held in different parts of the state on the occasion.
Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India, serving from 1964 to January 1966.
