The China Navigation Company and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment have signed memorandum of understanding to address critical waste management issues in Pacific islands.

As per the agreement the navigation company’s vessels will carry recyclable waste from Pacific islands and port them to suitable areas in the Asia Pacific.

Pacific island countries who have insufficient or inappropriate landfill space to store waste, have inadequate waste treatment facilities, and the financial inability to ship recyclable waste are eligible for this opportunity. The types of materials that are considered recyclable include plastics, aluminium cans, waste oil and ozone depleting substances.

As major responsible developing country, China will continue to work steadfastly to implement the Paris climate deal and join hands with all parties to tackle climate change to create sustainable environment for the pacific Island countries.
