A Congress delegation along with Delhi University teachers on Friday called on President Pranab Mukherjee and apprised him of the "injustice" being meted out to teachers of the varsity by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - led central government, with 4, 500 ad - hoc teachers not being absorbed.
The delegation also submitted a memorandum on the issue to the President.
"Ever since the BJP government came to power at the Centre, injustice is being meted out to Delhi University and its teachers, " Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken told reporters after meeting Mukherjee here.
The Congress leader said the central government has made a "cut of 55 per cent in the budget allocation for higher education", and as a result, around 4, 500 ad - hoc teachers of Delhi University, close to 50 per cent of the total strength of teachers of the varsity, have not been absorbed.
"According to rules, not more than 10 per cent of the total strength of teachers can be put in the ad - hoc category, " the Congress leader said.
The former union Minister said that between 1977 and 2003, ad - hoc teachers had been absorbed through an Ordinance.
"The delegation asked the President to direct Delhi University to absorb around 4, 500 ad - hoc teachers of the university with immediate effect, " he said.
He also said the promotion of around 3, 000 teachers has been stalled and there are "around 2, 500 physical education teachers in the university whom it is planning to put in the category of employees rather than teachers".
Maken said the delegation has also demanded that the report of the Pay Review Committee of Delhi University teachers, which was submitted long ago, should be made public.
